THE STATIC – What am I carrying into this that I chose?

CREATOR MODE  ·  Thoughts, Reflections, and Perspective

I almost had the wrong conversation.

Not wrong in the obvious way — wrong in the way that looks completely justified from the inside. I had a situation where something had happened, where I had been affected, where the case I was building in my head was airtight and reasonable and the kind of thing most people around me would have agreed with completely.

I was ready to say something about it. I had been ready for days. And then something stopped me — not wisdom, not maturity, just a question that surfaced before I could open my mouth:

What am I carrying into this that I chose?

I didn't like that question. It sat with me for longer than was comfortable. And when I finally answered it honestly, what I found was this: the story I had been telling myself — the completely accurate, thoroughly documented story — had a layer underneath it that had nothing to do with what happened and everything to do with what I had chosen to carry about what happened.

The static was mine. Not the situation. The static.

Nobody made me feel anything. I had chosen the response. And once I stopped being defensive about it, that was the most freeing thing I had realized in a long time.

The thing about building from a distorted place.

Here is what I didn't fully understand for a long time: the static doesn't stay in the situation it came from. It travels.

It travels into the conversations you have with people who are considering working with you. It travels into the room when you are trying to say something true about what you know. It travels into the moments when you are trying to step forward — to claim something, to start something, to put what you know in front of someone who needs it — and instead you hold back. Or you show up half-present. Or you say the right words in the wrong tone and something lands sideways and you can't quite explain why.

I have watched this pattern in myself for years. And I have watched it in every capable person who has come to me knowing they have something worth building but unable to fully access it. The knowledge is there. The experience is there. The genuine depth is there.

What's also there, running underneath it, is unexamined static. Energy that was chosen at some point and never cleared. And that static distorts everything it touches — not dramatically, not in ways that are easy to name, but in ways the people around you can feel even when they can't articulate what's off. There is a four-step process for actually clearing it

What clearing it actually changed.

The conversation I had — after I had cleared the static, after I had turned inward before pointing outward — was completely different from the one I had been rehearsing. Cleaner. More direct. Less charged. I said the actual thing instead of the version wrapped in everything I had been carrying.

That is what becomes available when the static clears. Not a different version of you. The same version of you, without the interference.

And if you have something you've been trying to step into — something you know, something you've been building toward, something that keeps almost happening and then not quite — I want to ask you the same question that stopped me:

What are you carrying right now that you chose? Not the situation. Not what happened. What you chose to carry about it.

That question doesn't let anyone off the hook. It retrieves something more valuable than that: your agency. The thing that makes the next move possible from exactly where you are.
